What You'll Learn On Your Wallpaper Course

Depending on the specific wallpaper installation course you take, you’ll learn a variety of skills tailored to that discipline. Our hands-on approach allows you to practise your skills in an interactive environment supported by our course leaders. You’ll come away with the confidence and knowledge to tackle any wallpapering project and be able to increase your service offering and income. 

All courses teach you fundamental strategies and techniques for hanging wallpaper and will typically cover:

  • How to prepare walls
  • Selecting the right tools
  • Choosing quality wallpapers
  • Solving common, and not so common, problems
  • Which paste is best for which job
  • Accurate measuring
  • Approaching complex projects or tasks
  • Correct calculations for the area, quantity and wastage
  • Working with tricky areas

What to expect

Depending on which course you are taking, you will learn a variety of different skills and techniques whilst focussing on a particular specialism. As a guide this is what to expect over the two days you are with us:

 

Day 1

  • Foundations and surface preparation
  • Introduction to wallpaper types and the pros and cons of each
  • The correct tools, such as pasting tables, seam rollers, and smoothing brushes
  • Dealing with imperfections
  • Sizing, priming and choosing the right adhesive
  • Calculating wallpaper needed including pattern repeat waste
  • Pasting techniques, including paste-the-wall vs paste-the-paper
  • Application methods 

 

Day 2

  • Practical applications and real time to practise hanging wallpaper
  • Cutting, handling and aligning wallpaper
  • Hanging around corners, doors, and windows and managing obstacles 
  • Seam placement and finishing joints cleanly
  • Common mistakes and fixes, such as bubbles, creases and peeling edges
  • Repositioning or removing mistakes, and repairing damage or lifting
  • Finishing touches, including trimming excess neatly and cleaning paste residue
  • Quoting jobs and client consultation tips
  • Industry standards and certification

What do I need to bring with me?

We’ll provide you with the appropriate equipment on the day of your wallpapering course for you to practise the techniques and learn how to safely handle any tools. You’ll need to bring:

  • NI number and photo ID (we will need this to enter you onto the Construction Training Register. This can be a driving licence, passport, ID Card or CSCS card.) 
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting messy (hopefully they won’t at all but just in case!) 
  • We ask you to please bring your own packed lunch. You will be given a lunch break so if you prefer to go to the shop to purchase something that’s no problem. 
  • If you are a CITB registered employer then please bring your CITB registration number so we can process your grant claim for the course.

Directions

The site is just a short drive from the M25 and approximately 30 minutes from Gatwick Airport. Edenbridge Train Station is less than 10 minutes by car. The postcode will take you to Gabriels Farm or Gabriels Fishery (depending which direction you come from) so look out for the large yellow signs at the end of the drive. As you turn into Gabriels Farm look out for a green metal gate on the left hand side and a telegraph pole with Unit 42 written on it. We are the end 2 units in a green metal polytunnel style unit and the car park is at the end of that driveway. Please park considerately and do not block the containers.

There are several hotels and B&B’s in the Edenbridge area such as Ye Old Crowne, Lingfield is a short drive away with rooms at The Star pub, or alternatively  East Grinstead is a larger town with a Premier Inn and Travelodge plus lots more food choices for the even

Directions

If using a SATNAV, the postcode can be temperamental. When you are on Chain Caul Way look out for a large white pipe that runs overhead across the road, and just next to that is the signage & entrance for Anchorage Business Park. As you enter the park the unit is the first one on your left hand side. There is plenty of parking available but please only use the bays marked ‘A1’ or ‘Visitor’. Once parked, come in through the door and up the stairs. 

Preston Lancs Train Station is around a 10 minute drive away and there are several nearby hotels if you need to stay over, including The Premier Inn in Preston City Centre.

Other information

A wallpaper course with PaintTech covers 1 – 2 days depending on the course. Our courses start at 9.30am and we always try to finish by 4:30pm. This gives us enough time to go through the knowledge and theory that you need to know, as well as other modules such as safety, and then plenty of time to get hands on and try out what you’ve learnt.

Depending on the particular wallpaper course you are taking, costs range from between £540 to £1080. CITB funding is available to pay for all of your course if you meet eligible criteria, and PaintTech can help you secure this funding. You can speak to us before you book if you’d like more help with course costs. Students also receive a 20% discount off Graham and Brown wallpapers when they register for a trade account.
